There are things you can learn from a book, a video or a music lesson. And then there are things you learn by doing the work—serving in church, writing songs, making mistakes and allowing God to shape both your gift and your character.

Who it’s for

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

Perhaps you’ve been writing songs privately but don’t know how to develop them. Maybe you’re already serving on a worship team and want to become more confident as a musician.

You may be beginning to lead worship, or perhaps you’ve been doing this for years and another perspective would help.

Mentorship is a place to bring those questions and work through them intentionally.

Gift and character grow together.

I don’t believe the goal is simply to become a better singer, songwriter, musician or worship leader. Those things matter. We should practise, study and take the gifts God has given us seriously.

But skill without character eventually becomes a problem.

So the conversations won’t always be about chords, melodies or set lists. Sometimes we may need to talk about serving when nobody notices, handling feedback, comparison, patience, discipline or remembering why we started.

Because the person carrying the gift matters too.

How mentorship works

A conversation built around where you are.

Rather than forcing everyone through the same programme, mentorship begins with understanding what you’re trying to develop.

That may mean working through a song, reviewing a worship set, looking at your musicianship, talking through a challenge in ministry or identifying an area you need to strengthen.

From there, we agree what would be most useful.

1:1 Mentorship

Personal sessions focused on your development.

Bring an original song and work through its lyrics, structure, melody and direction.

Worship Leader Development

Focused conversations around worship leadership, preparation, teams and ministry.

Musicianship Sessions

Practical development around music and instruments where John’s expertise is appropriate.

A note from John

I’m still learning too.

I think good mentorship works best when one person isn’t pretending to have arrived.

There are things I’ve learned that may save someone else time. There are mistakes I’ve made that someone else doesn’t need to repeat. And there are lessons God is still teaching me now.

So this isn’t about me having every answer. It’s about walking together for a little while, asking better questions and helping you steward what God has placed in your hands.
