Worship has
always been personal.
I’m John Great—a worshipper, worship leader and songwriter.
Long before there were songs to release or platforms to share them on, there was simply a love for Jesus and a desire to worship Him.
That is still where everything begins.
The beginning
It started with worship.
I grew up in Nigeria, and music became part of my life quite early. But what stayed with me wasn’t simply the singing. It was what happened when people gathered to worship God.
There was something about those moments that drew me in.
Over the years, I began serving in church and leading worship myself. What started simply became an important part of my walk with God, and through different seasons of life, worship remained one of the places where I felt closest to Him.
I didn’t know then exactly where the journey would lead. I just knew that I wanted my life to honour Jesus.
The journey
From Nigeria to the United Kingdom.
Life has taken me from Nigeria to the UK, through different churches, communities and seasons of faith.
Some seasons have been full of answers. Others have required patience, prayer and a great deal of trust. And perhaps that’s why many of the songs carry those same themes.
I don’t write from a place of having everything figured out. I write from the things I’m living, the things God is teaching me and the truths I find myself returning to again and again.
His faithfulness. His presence. The invitation to trust Him. And the decision to keep following Jesus, whatever the season looks like.

The songs
Somewhere along the way, the songs came.
Songwriting became another way of expressing the things I had been praying, learning and sometimes wrestling with.
Made Up My Mind came from that place—a decision that following Jesus isn’t something I want to do only when life makes sense. It’s the choice I want to keep making.
Other songs have come from different places, but I try not to write simply because it’s time to release something. I want the songs to mean something first.
If a lyric helps someone pray when they couldn’t find the words, reminds someone of God’s faithfulness, or turns someone’s attention back towards Jesus, that’s far more important to me than simply adding another song to a catalogue.

Why I still worship.
There are many things I love about music, but worship has never really been about music for me.
It’s about Jesus.
It’s about responding to who He is, not only with a song, but with a life.
I’m still learning what that means. I’m still growing in faith. I’m still discovering new reasons to trust Him.
Perhaps that’s what I hope people hear when they listen to the music: not someone who has arrived, but someone who has decided where he’s going.
And by God’s grace, I want to keep following Him.

Today
Still following.
Still writing.
Still worshipping.
Today, I live in the United Kingdom and continue to serve as a worship leader while writing and releasing music through John Great Music.
There are more songs ahead, including Durotimi, and I’m grateful for every person God allows the music to reach.
But wherever this journey goes, I don’t want to lose the reason it started: to know Jesus, to love Him and to help others turn their hearts towards Him.
